DR. DAVID LIVINGSTONE AND 'BIG TREE'

Statue of Dr David Livingstone

The 'Big Tree'

Quote:
Research differs as to who was the first European to see the Victoria Falls. What is indisputable is that David Livingstone brought the Victoria Falls to the attenton of the world. Born in Scotland in 1813, David Livingstone was a visionary who had an insatiable appetite for exploration and an obejective to open Africa to the world. The existence of the Falls had, of course, been known by local tribespeople and upon hearing stories about "Mosi oa Tunya" (The smoke that thunders), Livingstone set out to see the great waterfall. On November 16th 1855, Livingstone was taken by dugout canoe to the northern end of what is now Livingstone Island. It was from there that he crawled to the edge of the precipice and beheld the spectacle of the waterfall for the first time. "Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by Angels in their flight", wrote Livingstone of his experience. Livingstone continued on to write many important scientific and geographical notes on the Zambezi River and the Victoria Falls area which were later published in 1857.

Years later in 1869, Livingstone had not been heard from for a long time during one of his subsequent African expeditions. The New York Herald sensing a story sent a reporter, Henry Morton Stanley to hunt for Livingstone. Stanley found Livingstone with a bad case of malaria on the shores of Lake Tanganyika and from this meeting came the immortal (And probably inaccurate) quote of, "Dr. Livingstone I presume"

Quote:
On the Zambezi Drive above the Victoria Falls is the "Big Tree" which is of both historical and scientific interest. In the late 1800s, the Big Tree was the meeting place for early pioneers to stay overnight before proceeding to the Old Drift Settlement (now Livingstone). The tree is a large specimen of Baobab (dansonia digitata) which is a little over sixteen metres in circumference and is guessed to be in the region of 1500 years old. Close inspection makes it appear to be four trees growing close together but the root system is actually one. The oldest known Baobab trees can achieve circumference of 30 metres and will live to be over 4000 years old.

The Baobab tree is very drought resistant due to the ability to store large amounts of water in the spongy soft wood. When seen in the dry season without leaves it is easy to understand the African legend which tells of an Evil Spirit that grew angry with the Baobab trees and uprooted them all. The Spirit later reconsidered his actions and replanted them all upside-down.

These informations are taken from the book that my hubby bought in Victoria Falls but the photos were taken by me, so that's why the quality is not so good...

Happy birthday to my dear brother AHMAD FAUZI...
