BATIK, according to Wikipedia is a wax-resist dyeing technique used on textile. Batik is found in several countries of West Africa, such as Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon and Mali, and in Asia, such as India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, China, Iran, the Philippines, Malaysia and Thailand. However, it is in Indonesia that it is considered a national art form. You can read more about this here

There is something about Batik sarong that I can never forget. I was in Form 5 and a new boarder at the hostel that time. When it comes to dinner time, most of the girls will wear a tshirt and a Batik sarong to the dining hall which is situated just in the hostel compound. I am a someone who doesn't like to wear sarong as I find sarong will slower my movements. But I had to put it on so that I won't be the black sheep among the whites. And gosh, do I take time to put it on! One day when we were lining up to enter the hall, this one girl started laughing at me. When I asked her why, she pointed to my sarong which is not properly worn. The front is higher than back. I was embarrassed being laughed like that and I said to myself....."Hish, this girl is so cruel! Never befriend her!".... and guess what.....she ended up being my bestest friend!!!! Muahahaha.... So Linda, if you're reading this.... thank you for laughing at me, and for your information, I am still lousy at wearing sarongs! Muahahahahaha.....

Why did I bring up the story of Batik? Because I am going to 'serve' you with Batik Swiss Roll! Thanks to my bunch of friends who had made me felt challenged to try out this recipe. Heartiest thanks go to Ahpek of FNR and Mak Lang for sharing and promoting this recipe with all of us.




BATIK SWISS ROLL

Ingredients
:

(A)

6 nos eggs
4 oz castor sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla essence
1 tablespoon ovallette
3 oz flour
1 tablespoon milk powder

(b)

4 oz butter ~ melted

(C)
a bit of chocolate emulco

(D)
strawberry jam (I used 'Lempuk')

Method :

1. Place ingredients A in a mixing bowl. Beat on high speed for 5 to 7 minutes.
2. Pour in the melted butter. Mix well.
3. Set aside a few tablespoons of the batter and add in emulco. Stir to mix. Pour into a piping bag.
4. Spread the white batter onto the tray layered with greaseproof paper.
5. Pipe lines using the brown batter onto the white batter.
6. Using a toothpick, make lines across the brown batter to create batik effect.
7. Bake in a preheated oven at 170 C for 20 minutes.
8. Once baked, remove the cake from the tray onto a wire rack. Let it cool.
9. Turn the cake onto another piece of paper and spread the jam.
10. Slowly and carefully, roll the cake. Sliced it and ready to serve. But if you're using buttercream for the filling, please refrigerate for a while before cutting.

(loyang 36x36cm)

Bahan-bahan :

6 biji telur gred A @ B
4oz gula castor
1 sudu teh baking powder
1 sudu teh esen vanilla
1 sudu bsr ovallete
3oz tepung gandum
1 sudu bsr susu tepung
4oz mentega cair
sedikit coklat emulco
jem strawberri secukupnya

Cara-cara :

- Telur,gula,ovallete,baking powder,esen vanilla,tepung gandum dan susu tpg dipukul dgn kelajuan maksima sehingga gebu (5-7minit)
- Masukkan mentega cair,kemudian kacau rata.
- Asingkan sebahagian drpd adunan tadi (lebih kurang 1 1/4 cwn) ke dalam bekas lain,kemudian masukkan coklat emulco.Kacau rata kemudian masukkan adunan coklat ini ke dalam piping bag.
- Tuangkan adunan tadi ke dalam loyang kemudian ratakan permukaannya.
- Paipkan adunan coklat td di atas adunan yg diratakan dlm loyang
- Lorekkan/corakkan dgn menggunakan lidi
- Bakar dlm oven selama 20minit dgn suhu 170darjah celcius, api atas dan bawah.( 5 minit yg terakhir maisya pusingkan tray untuk dapatkan warna brown yg sekata)
- Apabila kek sudah masak terbalikkan ke atas sekeping kertas kemudian sapukan jem sehingga rata.
- Setelah jem disapu rata,gulung kek tadi perlahan2 sehingga kemas.
